Bus Stop (2nd Year)

Project Purpose: design a bus stop in Anchorage, Alaska while paying attention to the environment.  This was our first project that took sun angles and wind direction and velocity into consideration.

The site proved to be a challenge due to Anchorage’s extreme climate.  I had to determine the best design for a bus stop that would allow for people to feel as comfortable as possible.

Looking at the climate during the winter because of the extreme conditions, I determined that the cold wind would be the most important element to eliminate.  This was done by thickening the north and west walls with concrete to significantly reduce the winds interference with people.  A space behind the main seating area also offers a more cave-like experience providing even warmer conditions.  The overhang allows for sun into the space throughout the winter, and finished wood seating allows for a more comfortable and warmer experience while waiting for a bus in the winter.
